Prof Scheinkestel is a Consultant Physician with National Specialist Qualification in Internal Medicine, Nephrology and Intensive Care since 1986. He was a foundation member of the Joint Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (JFICM) and subsequently the College of Intensive Care Medicine (CICM).
Prof Scheinkestel was the Director of Intensive Care & Hyperbaric Medicine at the Alfred Hospital, leading a large and complex department which achieved international recognition as a centre of excellence in patient outcomes, research and education. Under his leadership, the Department won four Victorian Public Healthcare awards, the AHRI Wayne Cascio Award for organisational change and development, an Australian Business Award for Service Excellence, an Australian Mobile and App Design Award, The Best of the Best International Nutrition Competition four times, and was awarded Centre of Excellence by ELSO twice.
He has served on the Ministerial Emergency and Critical Care Committee, the Intensive Care Advisory Committee, and as Chairman of the Victorian Branch and member of the Board of Directors of the Australian and New Zealand Intensive Care Society.
He has received a number of research grants, including an NHMRC grant, has numerous publications, and given many invited presentations, both overseas and within Australia.
He is an adjunct clinical professor with the School of Public Health and Preventive Medicine, Monash University and has completed studies focussing on leadership in disruptive times, obtaining a Specialist Certificate in Executive Leadership at the Melbourne Business School.
Since 2016, Prof Scheinkestel has been employed by Monash Health, where he now holds the position of Executive Director Quality, Safety and Risk. His remit is to drive and support the organisation in the delivery of reliably safe, high-quality care that consistently meets or exceeds best practice standards and expectations.
Prof Scheinkestel undertakes a broad range of medicolegal consultations with a particular interest in medical negligence cases. He has many years of experience in medicolegal issues with a special interest in peri-operative care, bariatric and orthopaedic patients.
